Common Antiseptic Kills COVID-19 Virus In Seconds: Simple Solution May Be The Newest Weapon Against Pandemic
August, 26, 2020
Since January, the novel coronavirus has spread to almost every state and territory in the country, with more than 5 million COVID-19 cases confirmed. Areas like California, Florida, Texas and New York have been hit the hardest, while some states such as Maine, Wyoming, and Vermont have experienced far fewer cases.[*] Stories of loss, anger, and frustration appear frequently in the news; but, so do stories of hope, kindness, and determination. Life during the pandemic is far from normal and, of course, it’s far from over.
One of the many steps people have added to their daily lives is to wear some form of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as a mask or a face shield to avoid contracting the virus. Others have taken further precautions, such as using hand sanitizer or wearing gloves when out in public. And, in some higher risk areas, such as nursing, people are going as far as removing their clothing and showering before returning home to avoid spreading the virus to their families. However, many people are still wondering what more they can do to not only protect themselves against the virus but prevent spreading it to more people.
People might not always agree on the rules, recommendations, and opinions around the use of PPE such as using hand sanitizer and wearing a mask in public, but proper hygiene and preventative measures are necessary defenses in the war against COVID-19. Washing your hands often and using hand sanitizer before and after touching possibly contaminated surfaces is proven to reduce the risk of contracting and spreading the disease. And wearing the proper protective equipment, such as masks and face shields can prevent the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) from spreading from person to person in areas where social distancing isn’t possible.
Now, researchers have discovered another tool to fight off the novel coronavirus. Studies have confirmed that a common antiseptic (one that you probably already have on the shelf or in your medicine cabinet) kills the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), which causes COVID-19, in just seconds.[*][*] That’s right! A simple povidone-iodine (PVP-I) solution may be the newest weapon against the coronavirus.
Actually, it’s not all that new. In fact, antiseptic products containing PVP-I have proven effective against previous coronaviruses, like those that caused major outbreaks such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). Now, those same common household antiseptic solutions have a 99.99% kill rate against the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19 disease. The best part is it works to destroy the virus in 30 seconds or less.[*][*]
A team of researchers conducted a study and discovered that at concentrations of up to 1.25% in the nose and up to 2.5% in the mouth, a PVP-I solution is so effective at killing the novel coronavirus that they suggest "the use of PVP-I products can augment health and hygiene measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in the community."[*] The findings were further backed by more research, leading one top pharmaceutical company executive to say:
"We know that we must continue to be vigilant in stopping the spread of COVID and measures such as hand hygiene, wearing a mask, social distancing and using antiseptic products may all play an important role."[*]
Well, that is great news! Now, how can it be included in your PPE and used as a daily defensive measure against developing and spreading COVID-19?
The three main areas of the body the novel coronavirus is most likely to infect are the eyes, nose, and mouth. To those high risk areas, a PVP-I solution can only be effectively administered orally as a mouthwash or intranasally through the nose as a mist or spray. By using a mouthwash or nasal rinse solution during times when you’re at high risk of exposure, you may be able to kill the novel coronavirus before an infection takes place.
In some countries, like Canada, these types of sprays and mouthwashes can be purchased over the counter at pharmacies to prevent colds other infections in a similar fashion.[*] However, in the US, these options are not available at the pharmacies. Instead, a PVP-I solution could be administered orally as a mouth rinse or intranasally with the use of a sinus therapy system or intranasal delivery device. Of course, always consult with your Doctor on the appropriate medication and treatment for COVID-19 or any other disease.
A PVP-I solution may not be the silver bullet we’ve all been waiting for to come and put an end to the pandemic. Nevertheless, it has shown to be highly effective at killing the novel coronavirus within seconds of its application. For years, PVP-I solutions have been used in a similar fashion to prevent various types of illnesses and infections, and it is already available in other countries. Who knows what future possibilities may be waiting?
